Maurice D. "Maury" Scherf

KNOX – Maurice D. “Maury” Scherf passed away early Sunday, October 20, 2024, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 20, 1931, in Libertyville, IL to the late Herman and Martha (Volling) Scherf, and was 93 years-old at the time of his death. Maury lived in the area most of his life, moving to the Knox area from Illinois when he was about ten years old. He graduated from Knox High School, class of 1950. After school Maury proudly served his country by enlisting in the US Army. Soon after returning from the Army, he married the love of his life Lorraine Tetzloff on June 13, 1953, in North Judson. They shared sixty wonderful years together before her passing in 2013. He was a lifetime member of the Knox American Legion Post #131 and a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Knox. Maury was a proud farmer who could fix about anything. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator, retiring from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #150 after fifty years. Maury was a hard worker who liked restoring things. He also made homemade wine for over forty years. He loved talking to people, playing cards, and wintering in Palm Harbor, Florida. Most of all, Maury enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Maury is survived by: one son William (Gina) Scherf of Knox; one daughter Sharon (Dwight) Scroggins of Hebron; six grandchildren Eric (Christy) Scherf of Scottsdale, AZ, Brandee Scherf-Rudd of Knox, Evan Scherf of Hamlet, Ryan Scherf of Knox, Darren (Janet) Scroggins of Wheatfield, and Sarah (Kevin) Holm-Hansen of Wheatfield; six great grandsons Jeremy (Erica) Crittenden, Qwynton Rudd, Aaron Scherf, Kolt Scherf, and Draven & Ralend Scroggins; seven great granddaughters Maura Scherf, Makaila Rudd, Grace Scherf, Laramie Scherf, Ashley Rollins, Cassidy (Kyle) Quillin, and Raychel Ricker; one great-great granddaughter Milani Ceja; two brothers Milton (Carol) Scherf of Ft. Wayne and Jerry Scherf of Knox; one brother-in-law Donald (Sandy) Tetzloff; and one sister-in-law Marlene Tetzloff. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Funeral services will be at 1:00 CDT Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Visiting hours will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM CDT also on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Round Lake Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox American Legion and Knox VFW. Memorial Contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
